Erratic defense, poor offense doom Medina in loss to St. Edward

AVON — The Medina baseball team continued to play erratic defense Sunday and dropped a 9-0 non-league bashing to St. Edward at Sprenger Stadium, home of the Lake Erie Crushers.

“The cold and rain was not a factor,” coach Nick Kaplack said. “Yeah, that’s a good team and they’ve got eight college commits, but we had good pitching and only gave up four hits. We just did not play defense the way we should.

“It was not a good game for us.”

The poor defense matched the lousy weather, as cold and wind caused the first pitch to be pushed from noon to 12:30, allowing a rain front to pass.

Medina pitching surrendered four hits and six walks and kept its team in the game until the fifth inning. The Bees trailed 3-0 when a ground ball through the left side of the infield, an error at third base and walk fueled the rally.

After Finn McDonald replaced starter Dominic Rahe, a single, passed ball and wild pitch scored three.

The nightmare continued into the bottom of the sixth, when the Eagles put across three more runs on only one hit. The rally took on steam from three walks, another wild pitch and a passed ball.

St. Edward starter Justin Slattery faced but 24 batters, issued no walks and started a 1-6-3 double play. Over the final three innings, he faced only 10 batters.

Medina wasted several opportunities early against Slattery. In the second inning, Nate Lucarelli led off with a double but was stranded.

In the third, Kaedin Andrasik singled with one out and stole second, but the inning ended without a key hit. Breydan Cavey’s fourth inning lead-off single was erased in the double play.

“I was hitting the corners with fastballs and keeping them off-guard with curveballs and changeups” Slattery said. “The key was taking my time out there.”

Kaplack his team “has to turn it around and get back to where we were in Florida.”

Medina won 4-of-5 games at the Historic Dodgertown Spring Invitational in Vero Beach in late March.

“It starts (today),” he said. “The only way to combat a bad week is with a good week.”
