MACEDONIA — Zak Zografos stands 6-foot-6 and seldom faces a taller opponent, which is why Nordonia presented a unique challenge with its twin 6-9 post players.
The outcome, however, was no different than usual.
Zografos scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds, had two assists and made a career-high six 3-pointers Tuesday, leading Brunswick’s boys basketball team to a 69-46 non-league victory at Nordonia.
The senior center neutralized Knights big men Ben Broscheid and Alec Broscheid by luring them out of the lane, then buried 6-of-12 treys over their outstretched arms. Zografos only attempted two shots inside the arc, making one, in dominating the matchup.
“That’s his versatility and what makes Zak so special,” Blue Devils coach Joe Mackey said. “He had a slow start to the season — and he’ll be the first to tell you that — but he’s really picked it up over the last several games. We know that he can take over games for us with his all-around skills, like he did tonight.”
Point guard Nick Felician collected 11 points, a game-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals for Brunswick (10-2), while shooting guard Kyle Goessler had 10 points and a team-best four assists.
Shooting guard Steve Barnes topped Nordonia (5-6) with nine points off the bench. Point guard Evan Wiehe added five points, five rebounds and four assists.
The rest of the Knights were non-factors as the Blue Devils shut them down. Shooting guard Drew Petros, who averaged 18.3 points over the previous four games, missed all seven of his field goal attempts and went scoreless, while starting pivot Ben Broscheid had five points and backup Alec Broscheid added three. The seniors combined to shoot 2-of-6 from the field and grab eight rebounds while Zografos outplayed them at both ends of the court.
“I’ve struggled shooting the ball a couple of times this season, so it was nice to see it go in over and over again — and win the game,” Zografos said. “(Felician and Goessler) are our primary ballhandlers, and they were looking for me the whole way, so my job was just to make shots.”
Brunswick, which never trailed, built a 42-18 halftime lead behind 11 points from Zografos. It’s high water mark of 56-23 occurred midway through the third quarter when small forward Xavier Diaz made two free throws.
Power forward Alex Wyatt also got in on the fun with eight points, three assists and three steals for the Blue Devils. Danny Dakdouk chipped in seven points and Trevor Mackey had three points and two rebounds.
The latter two, along with Jason Becka, will be counted on heavily Friday when Brunswick takes on Euclid in Greater Cleveland Conference action.
Soccer All-American Felician will be in Philadelphia playing in a national all-star game, leaving the Blue Devils without their floor general.
“It’s a heck of an honor for Nick — a once-in-a-lifetime experience — and we’re all excited for him to represent himself and our community there,” Joe Mackey said.
Zografos also wished his teammate good luck and expressed confidence in the next men up on the roster.
“We have a lot of talent and know there are number of guys who are capable of getting the job done,” Zografos said. “This is a very unselfish team, so we’ll do our best to help them as much as we can.”
Josh Stacho scored 13 points as Brunswick’s junior varsity won 52-31.
