Tournament draw sets stage for potential Medina-Brunswick showdown in sectional final

Two things have remained consistent over the past decade: The Brunswick boys basketball team reaches 14 wins and gets a lot of love from other coaches at the tournament draws.

The trend held true Sunday, as coach Joe Mackey’s Blue Devils (15-4), who have reached 14 wins in 19 consecutive seasons, picked up the second seed behind parochial power St. Edward (16-3) at the new Strongsville Division I District.

Brunswick received a first-place vote from Lincoln-West along with eight No. 2s, three No. 3s and one No. 4, which was from the Eagles. The highest and lowest votes were thrown out by rule, giving Brunswick 129 points to St. Edward’s 143. St. Ignatius (121) was the third seed and received the final bye.

The voting also created a potential Medina County matchup, as the Blue Devils will host No. 7 Medina (5-14) or No. 10 Normandy (5-13) in a March 3 sectional semifinal. The Bees will battle the Invaders on Feb. 28.

St. Ignatius (11-6), No. 6 Brecksville (12-6) and No. 11 Valley Forge (4-13) also are on that side of the bracket.

Districts were reshuffled following the dissolving of the Copley District, which had been going strong since the 1970s but was axed in a budget-crunching move. That sent Highland and Wadsworth to the Barberton D-I District.

The voting was tight, as Stow (15-3) edged Archbishop Hoban (16-2) 138-137 for the top seed. Green (12-6), Walsh Jesuit (13-6), Copley (12-5) and Ellet (12-7) followed, while the Hornets (11-7) and Grizzlies (10-8) were seed Nos. 7 and 8.

Both will play Feb. 28 sectional semifinals at home on opposite sides of the bracket.

The Grizzlies will square off with No. 9 Firestone (7-11), and the winner will move to play at Stow on March 3. The Hornets will host 10th-seeded Cuyahoga Falls (6-12) for the second time in three seasons — they won 51-47 in 2016 — with a March 3 date at Hoban awarded to the victor.

The North Ridgeville D-II District didn’t have much voting drama, as Buckeye (13-6) picked up the fifth seed behind Holy Name (15-2), Bay (13-5), Clearview (15-3) and Keystone (15-4). Cloverleaf (7-12) was 10th ahead of Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division members Brookside (5-13) and Firelands (4-14).

The Bucks will see familiar faces, as they host Firelands on Feb. 27. The winner travels to Keystone on March 2, and Holy Name is almost guaranteed to be waiting in the district semifinals.

The Colts are on the other side of the bracket and travel to seventh-seeded Padua Franciscan (8-11) for a Feb. 27 sectional semifinal. The winner gets a March 2 road date with Bay.

Black River (3-16) was the 12th and final seed at the Wooster D-III District and will play at Smithville (10-6) in a Feb. 27 sectional semifinal ahead of No. 4 Manchester. The Pirates have not won a tournament game since 2010.
