Cole Tessena breaks 23-year-old record in Highland win over Aurora

GRANGER TWP. — The Highland boys basketball team has been looking to close out a game the right way.

The Hornets did so Tuesday, getting 25 points from small forward Bryce Profitt and 17 from shooting guard Cole Tessena to take down Suburban League American Conference foe Aurora 70-51.

In the process, Tessena set a Highland season record with 51 3-pointers. He hit four treys on the night to pass Russ Pay’s record of 47 in 1995-96.

Coach Adam Cestaro said Tessena was purposefully unaware of the record in order to keep pressure off the senior.

“It really felt great,” Tessena said. “I’m proud of what I did and proud of my teammates. Coach just had us focus on the first quarter, then the next and the next until the clock said zero.”

The Hornets (7-10, 4-5), who have lost seven games by six points or fewer, led 55-35 at the half and stayed in control the rest of the way.

“I like the way we’re playing,” Cestaro said.

Aurora (9-8, 5-5) got 14 points from Gabriel Elsawy. One of the top scorers in the SL American, Ethan Hays, was held to eight points and three assists.

Note

Carson Levandowski scored 14 for the Hornets and Highland took the junior varsity contest 63-58.
