MEDINA — For the fourth time in school history, the Medina girls basketball team has reached the 20-win mark.

The Bees made win No. 20 look pretty easy Wednesday, whipping Wooster 67-45.

Not that it looked like a mismatch to start. Wooster, after all, won the Ohio Cardinal Conference. But the Bees (20-2), who had an 18-game winning streak this season, blew the Generals (16-4) off the court, racing out to a 37-14 halftime lead.

Wooster rallied in the third quarter behind three Sydney Clapp baskets, two of them 3-pointers, as well as a couple of Medina turnovers to cut the lead to 40-25.

The Bees didn’t buckle though. Elizabeth Stuart hit a 3-pointer, Madison Luthy had three baskets Sarah McKee converted a nifty reverse layup to put the Bees up 53-36.

“I was concerned, but only about Medina,” Bees coach Karen Kase said of the brief Wooster charge. “I wanted to be sure we stayed up to Medina standards.

“McKee and Lindsay Linard were tough and active and Katie Niete gave us some energy off the bench.”

The coach said winning 20 games is an accomplishment, but not one she thought much about before the season.

“I didn’t see winning 18 straight games either,” she said. “I saw us being a good team and moving forward. I’m excited.”

“We came up really hard with our defense and stepped it up with steals and rebounds,” sophomore Sarah McKee said. “We all worked together with or without the ball and stayed active.”

Medina outrebounded the Lady Generals 23-15 and forced Wooster into 19 turnovers.

Stephanie Smith led Wooster with 21 points and six rebounds, but the Bees defense also limited Daisha Brown (15.7 ppg), and Clapp (10.6 ppg) to 13 and eight, respectively. Smith came in averaging 15.6 per game.

Only five of the nine Wooster players scored.

Stuart paced Medina with 20 points while Luthy had 14 and McKee 12.

Hailey Tripp had 20 and Shanno Wojciak added 15 in Medina’s 55-35 junior varsity win over Wooster.
