High school basketball: Slow start dooms Brunswick, falls to Solon in GCC

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick boys basketball team faltered out of the gate, then spent the entire second half chasing Friday night in 77-67 loss to Solon.

The Greater Cleveland Conference game began poorly for the Blue Devils, with Solon (12-8, 8-5) racing to a 10-point lead after one quarter. The second period was worse, and by halftime Brunswick (10-11, 6-7) was trailing 42-23.

The Blue Devils played better after intermission, pursuing the visitors with energy. At the end, they had cut the lead to 10 points, but the early deficit was too much.

“That’s a real good team,” Brunswick coach Joe Mackey said. “But we had a rough start, and you can’t do that with a team that was a state finalist a year ago.

“We battled back, but that’s the story of our season — a brutal schedule and elementary mistakes. We let shooters shoot, drivers drive and people rebound. We’ve been consistent with that all season. And you can’t spot Solon 10 points after one quarter.

“We were much better in the second half and we made it interesting, but we’re not here to be interesting.”

The Comets pushed their lead to 51-30 before the Blue Devils closed the gap with a pair of 3-pointers and a thunderous dunk from Kyle Goessler (21 points), plus another three from Max Ferrell, leaving them behind 53-39 entering the fourth period.

Two 3-pointers each by Trevor Mackey (16 points), Tre Massey (13) and Jeff Buttitta helped Brunswick score 28 points in the final eight minutes, but it was too little, too late.

“We got a lot of energy from the crowd,” Trevor Mackey said. “We just couldn’t quite keep them engaged.”

Goessler finished 10-for-15 from the field for the Blue Devils, while Mackey was 7-for-12.

Trent Williams led Solon with 21 points, while the Comets got 18 points from David Marbury and 12 from Nick Close.

Quintyn McKinley scored 21 points and the Blue Devils hit 12 3-pointers to crush Solon 78-57 in the junior varsity game.
