High school football: Daw, Sutherland honored as all-district teams announced

  • 21411226

Medina's Jimmy Daw breaks away from Whitmer's Luke Walling during the fourth quarter.

The Medina football team was rewarded Thursday when the All-Northeast Inland District teams were released by The Associated Press.

Bees senior running back Jimmy Daw shared Division I Offensive Player of the Year with Massillon Jackson wide receiver Dillon Dingler, the Federal League Player of the Year and a likely Major League Baseball Draft choice in June. Dingler, who also stars at safety, kicks field goals and extra points and punts for a 42-yard average, is committed to Ohio State for baseball.

Medina’s Dan Sutherland was D-I Coach of the Year after the Bees matched their most wins since 1923 (9), while right tackle Dillon Brauser (6-5, 315, sr.), wide receiver Dylan Fultz (6-0, 170, jr.) and safety Nick Pankow (6-1, 196, sr.) joined Daw on the D-I first team, meaning they will be no worse than special mention All-Ohio. Brunswick nose tackle Aaron Naples (6-1, 230, sr.) also was first team.

Wadsworth quarterback Joey Baughman (6-1, 185, jr.) was the area’s lone D-II first-team selection, while Buckeye tackle Hunter Gray (6-2, 240, sr.), linebacker Dustin McCullough (5-8, 200, sr.) and punter Dominick Kriz (6-0, 240, jr.) got the honors in D-III.

D-V Black River tied Medina for the most first-team selections from the area with guard Curtis Roupe (6-2, 245, sr.), fullback Jacob Campbell (6-1, 195, jr.), outside linebacker Cory Hamilton (5-11, 195, sr.) and defensive end Nick Wagner (5-10, 180, sr.).

The district committee did not select second teams in any division for the first time in at least a decade.

Honorable mention in D-I went to Medina’s J.T. Scoarste, Jake Wenzinger, Jonathan Lally, Alex Whittaker and Will Mercurio and Brunswick’s Jacob Martin, Colin Sustersic and John Saville.

Honorable mention in D-II went to Highland’s Jake Mall, Chris Petrilla, Max Beier, Ryan Frederick and Carson Ciesinski and the Grizzlies’ Alex Jones, Craig Palidar and Cody Surratt. Honorable mention in D-III was awarded to Buckeye’s Michael Doerge, Justin Canedy and Richard Van Boxel and Cloverleaf’s Cory Stallings and Nick Soika. Honorable mention in D-V included Black River’s D.P Shranko and Zack Beard.

The district’s Mr. Football nominee was Warren Harding quarterback Lynn Bowden, who has powered the Raiders to the D-II regional finals with 2,394 yards rushing and more than 1,000 passing. The ESPN three-star recruit committed to Indiana on Saturday.
