High school football: Jacob Campbell dominates, leads Black River to victory over Oberlin

OBERLIN — Black River senior Jacob Campbell spent more time in the Oberlin end zone Friday night than he did on the bus getting to the game.

Campbell scored five touchdowns in the first 14 minutes as the Pirates routed Oberlin 53-7 in a non-league game.

Campbell’s first score, a 21-yarder, capped an opening seven-play, 84-yard drive.

Before the first quarter ended, Campbell added touchdown runs of 35 and 9 yards as Black River (5-0) built a 27-0 lead.

“It’s all about the offensive line,” said Campbell, who rushed for a game-high 126 yards, all in the first half. “I can’t do what I do without them doing what they do. They block for me, I run for them.

“Our defense put our offense in great positions time after time. That gave us the momentum and we just rolled with it.”

Campbell had touchdowns of 4 and 3 yards in the second quarter.

Black River, which has only allowed 23 points on the season, forced six Oberlin turnovers, including two on fumbled kickoffs that led directly to Pirates touchdowns.

Travis Sexton and Riley Gibbs each had a touchdown in the first half to help the Pirates extend their lead to 47-0 before the bands took the field.

As dominating as Black River was, the final score could have been much worse had the Pirates not committed 11 penalties, resulting in three touchdowns being called back.

“We were very sloppy early on,” Black River coach Al Young said. “We came out kind of flat, but as the game went on, we made some plays and forced some turnovers and did what good teams should do.”

Black River gained all 418 yards of offense on the ground. The Pirates only attempted three passes, and one was intercepted by the Phoenix.

Oberlin (1-4) didn’t get on the board until the fourth quarter, when it caught the Pirates secondary napping on a 62-yard halfback pass form Hunter Clawson to a wide-open Aaron Arnold.

Junior Ravon Eisom led the Phoenix, which is allowing 44.4 points per game, with 92 yards on 18 carries.
