TOWSEND TWP. — Black River got the 2018 football season off to a running start Friday night and never looked back.
The Pirates had a 60-yard touchdown run called back on the second play but scored on a 72-yard run on the first play of their second series while cruising to a 51-6 non-league win at Western Reserve.
Black River senior Spencer Constable ran for 105 yards and caught four passes for 110 yards, scoring three touchdowns.
“It was good to see how it all worked out on the field,” he said.
Constable broke loose on the second play for the 60-yard touchdown that was called back for holding, but Black River ground out a 10-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a 6-yard run by Caleb Simonson.
On the first play of the next series, Constable broke left after a fabulous fake up the middle drew the defense, then sprinted away from the secondary for a 72-yard score.
It took four plays for the Pirates to find the end zone on their next series, with Constable running past the secondary on a fly pass and hauling in Riley Bartolic’s pass in stride for a 41-yard score. Just 9:08 into the game, Black River was up 22-0.
“It’s always good to get a win, get out of the blocks on the right track, so I’m happy with the win,” Black River coach Al Young said.
Constable added a 35-yard TD catch in the third quarter on what he called his favorite play of the night.
“That loop route in the third quarter, that was good,” he said. “I mean, I almost lost that ball in the lights, but I had it.”
Bartolic threw for 140 yards and three touchdowns, including a 20-yard, first-half strike to Simonson. Chance Bailey added a 32-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and Tommy Yourich capped the scoring with a 44-yard score.
Alex Vormelker had 10 carries for 82 yards, Yourich had two for 67 and Simonson added 55 yards. Black River ran for 380 yards and outgained Western Reserve 520-111.
“The kids played well, and we kept the pressure on them,” Young said.
There were enough little mistakes to give the veteran coach fodder for practice next week. The defense allowed two long-ish drives — an eight-play, 41-yarder for the Roughriders’ only score and a 16-play, 58-yarder to start the second half that ended on downs at the Pirates 17.
“We’re extremely young, and it showed at a couple points tonight,” Young said. “The key is to grow each week so we can be better. We have to clean some things up, and that starts tomorrow morning. And I hope they are good learners.”
