WESTFIELD TWP. — Two football teams looking to right their seasons clashed Friday at Gene Clark Stadium.
Cloverleaf dropped its fourth straight, losing 34-19 to Woodridge in Portage Trail Conference Metro Division action.
The Colts (2-4, 0-3) last won on Aug. 31 in Week 2, a 38-32 non-league victory over Keystone.
Woodridge (2-4, 2-1), a first-time winner last week at Streetsboro, showed it still has some magic left, jumping on the Colts early for a 10-0 lead and going up 24-6 at halftime.
Bulldogs quarterback Andrew Mekeal torched the Colts with 295 yards on 16-for-22 passing. The junior had plenty of targets, but especially wide receiver Elijah Arnett, who posted 10 catches for 195 yards and a score. Mekeal also completed passes of 50 and 51 yards to DJ Snyder and Arnett, respectively, as Woodbridge piled up 416 yards total offense .
Workhouse running back Denver Cody racked up 121 yards on 21 carries for the Bulldogs .
“They made some big plays,” Cloverleaf coach Justin Vorhies said. “We made little mistakes that kept us from making big plays. They executed and we mostly did not. We’ve got to learn to be patient and make the right reads on defense.”
Cloverleaf quarterback Brody Stallings had a touchdown nullified by a penalty as the Colts battled back in the fourth quarter, but there were bright spots.
John Manzuk went 59 yards for a late third-quarter TD and Kody Trent caught a 25-yard scoring pass from Stallings to cut into the deficit with 1:36 remaining.
Manzuk finished with 121 yards on 14 carries and Stalling added 75 on 17 attempts.
In the first half, Woodridge moved nearly at will, with a first-quarter field goal from Tanner Laughorn and two long bombs by Mekeal.
The Colts could only counter with a Stallings touchdown run that completed an eight-play, 70-yard drive.
Woodridge answered that with a scoring strike from Mekeal to Loughrie with 47 seconds left in the half.
