High school wrestling: Wadsworth rebounds from St. Edward loss to win Suburban League tournament

WADSWORTH — Just call the Wadsworth wrestling team the Silly Putty of the Suburban League.

A school that was pushed to the limit and beat up just three days prior bounced back into form Saturday at the conference championships to lock up its 24th straight league title.

“The ride back was quiet,” Grizzlies coach John Gramuglia said about the bus trip home from St. Edward on Wednesday after a 47-10 loss. “We were suffering. It was good for us. We had a reflection. That next practice we were serious. It was, ‘Let’s get back to fundamentals.’”

Not only did Wadsworth get back to fundamentals at the SLT, it got back to winning.

The Grizzlies sent 13 wrestlers to the finals of the National Division and crowned Noah Baughman (120 pounds), Michael North (126), Luke Baughman (132), Connor Clark (138), Joey Baughman (160), Chris Suarez (195) and Kyle Green (285).

Brock Swartzbaugh (106), Matt McMillan (113), Ryan Orr (145), Cody Surratt (152), Alex Jones (170) and Clay McComas (220) finished second, while Evan Goebel (182) was third.

“It’s hard to lose like we did (to St. Edward), but I think our guys knew that we didn’t wrestle to our best ability,” four-time conference champion Noah Baughman said. “We just needed to prove ourselves again this weekend.

“A loss like that was hard, but I didn’t worry. I trusted our guys. I knew we had some fuel in our fire. Not much has changed. We took a loss, whoop de doo. We fought back hard. We’re back to wrestling.”

The SL threw a new wrinkle with an ultimate championship, where the winners of the National and American divisions squared off with bragging rights on the line.

Noah Baughman, North, Luke Baughman, Joey Baughman and Suarez won ultimate championships to further cement their legacies.

“We obviously needed to prove ourselves at this tournament,” Joey Baughman said. “It definitely gave us a lot of confidence — it gave me a lot of confidence last year — it should do wonders for our time for the sectional tournament.”

If there was a team that picked up some confidence heading into sectional action, Highland certainly fit the bill.

Winless in the regular season because they only have eight wrestlers, the Hornets finished fourth in the American Division behind Aurora, Copley and Tallmadge and missed third place by one point.

Tyler Wissel (120) and Bradley Staron (132) finished second, while Brandon Yu (3rd, 113), Ryan Wissel (3rd, 126), Brandon Linder (3rd, 138), Josh Kedzior (4th, 145), Andrew Plevris (4th, 152) and Joey D’Amico (4th, 285) also placed.

Every wrestler reached the podium.

“I feel as though this was a confidence-booster,” Yu said. “You go through the season, keep drilling hard and keep going at it. I feel that we’ve gone pretty far from where we started with coach (Alan) Fried and coach Kevin (Zywiec). They’re very helpful and have taught us great technique we can use.”

How Highland uses it remains to be seen, but the fact the Hornets put it all together only two weeks before the postseason has the squad thinking big.

“I feel like we need to stick the basics and go as hard as we can,” Yu said. “If we do that, we can do big things.”
