STOW — The grins on the faces of Eli Fragnoli and his Highland track teammates said it all Thursday night at the Suburban League Championships.

Trailing Copley by a point heading into final event, the Hornets put together an impressive win in the 4x400-meter relay to capture their second straight SL American Conference crown.

“It means everything,” said Fragnoli, who had a hand in three events wins over the two-day meet. “All track athletes dream about it coming down to the last race, and today it did. It’s something special to be a senior and have this moment.”

Despite the nip-and-tuck finish to the meet and a weather delay that lasted well over an hour, Highland was able to compile 168 points to hold off the Indians (164).

It came down to Fragnoli, Greg McKee, Tyler Madison and Jacob Tecco, who combined to finish in 3:28.88 and beat Barberton (3:30.49).

“I knew it would be close, so we made sure that we had our top team in there,” Hornets coach Josh Victor said. “I knew these guys could run like this. They were ready for it. I’m proud of this team.”

Along with the 4x8 and thrower Owen Wendl winning on Tuesday, Highland got victories in the 110 and 300 hurdles by Fragnoli, who clocked times of 14.90 and 38.98.

Fragnoli, a state qualifier in the 110s a year ago, broke the 15-second mark for the second time this spring and got under 39 seconds for the first time since his school-record run of 38.87 that was hand-timed last month.

But Thursday was all about getting that team trophy.

“We were keeping track of the score and then the weather delay hit and we knew we were still down,” Fragnoli said. “But we ended up finishing better in the two-mile than Copley to set it up for us to PR in the best race of the season.”

Despite Copley’s Chase Harbaugh out-sprinting Highland’s Max McAdams for the 3,200 win, McAdams’ second-place run and Avery Finding’s fourth were enough to set the stage for the 4x4.

Highland also picked up points with second-place finishes by the 4x2 relay and Vince Manning in the 800 and 1,600.

The Highland girls didn’t need the same heroics, and a lot of that had to do with Kaylie Kenne. The senior was downright dominant in taking first in the 1,600 (5:04.69), 800 (2:20.94) and 3,200 (10:46.52), beating her meet record in the latter event, set last year, by more than 13 seconds.

“It was really fun, but it was kind of sad,” Kenne said. “(Tallmadge’s) Ravyn (Edge) was talking to me and saying, after I was close to getting the mile record, she was like, ‘Hey, you have next year. Oh wait.’ It’s just kind of weird because I know everyone in this league.”

Highland freshman Ellen Fuller won the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 11 inches, and the 4x4 of Amanda Orban, Brooke Stuart, Madison Miller and Marley Wylie clocked a 4:12.92 to take top honors.

Miller was second in the 300 hurdles (47.90), with the 4x2 also raking runner-up honors.

“I was hoping just to throw without thinking, because whenever I think, I don’t throw that well,” Fuller said. “I just thought about hitting all the spots and doing what I do at practice.”

Wadsworth was runner-up as a team in the SL National portion of the meet. Freshman Clare Nicholas broke a meet record en route to her win in the 1,600 (5:02.84) for the team’s lone individual victory.

“She was right on me and started to make a move in the third lap, so with 1,200 left I tried to make a move,” Nicholas said. “On the fourth, I just wanted to increase the lead.”

Throwers Kira Tavanello and Alyssa Driss were second and third, respectively, while Sami Shaffer (800), the 4x2, Rachel Murphy (1,600) and Colleen Fry (100) also were third.

Jacob Atlas was third in the pole vault to lead the Wadsworth boys. Atlas cleared 13-6, while Mason Birkbeck was fourth in the 100. The 4x4, Benji House (3,200) and the 4x1 also were fourth as Wadsworth was fifth as a team.
