OREGON — Medina senior Brady Chrisman was happy to show Northwest Ohio what his brand of wrestling was all about Saturday as he dominated his way to the 170-pound championship at the Maumee Bay Classic at Clay High.
Chrisman was one of four placers — Jared Dressler finished fourth at 120, Ian Senz took fourth at 138 and Ethan Silvis was sixth at 160 — who helped the Bees to fifth in the 45-team field.
“This tournament is one of the toughest in the state this year, and I knew that every single match, from the first one to the finals, was going to be a tough one,” said Chrisman, who placed third at the event last season. “I had to bring my A game every single match, and coming away with the title was real big.”
Chrisman opened with an 18-4 major decision over Central Crossing senior Mason Morris, then pinned Berea-Midpark freshman Ronald Williams in 51 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Chrisman scored a 10-5 win over Hamler Patrick Henry sophomore T.J. Rhamy and earned his spot in the final with a 14-2 major decision over Bedford (Mich.) sophomore Colin Jagielski, a 2017 regional qualifier to the Michigan Cadet national team, in the semifinals.
In the title match, Chrisman put on a clinic as he rolled to a 19-7 major decision over Delta junior J.D. Osborn.
“I found my zone,” Chrisman said. “I controlled all the stuff that I could control. I controlled my pace, I controlled my aggression and the match went my way.”
The other three Medina placement matches saw Dressler, ranked No. 13 in Division I in the state, lose by forfeit to Solon’s Jake Canitano, ranked No. 4 in D-I; Senz, ranked No. 14 in D-I, lose 12-5 to Michigan state placer Mason Hayes of Chippewa Hills and Silvis get pinned in 4:48 by Uniontown Lake’s Sean-Michael James.
Medina, which was runner-up last season, finished behind champion Elyria (213.5), Wauseon (184), host Clay (182.5) and CVCA (121). Beside the Pioneers and a handful of other Northeast district teams, the Bees faced mostly unknown competition.
“I don’t think I wrestled any of the opponents (before) I had the past two days,” Chrisman said. “It’s kind of fun to come out here and wrestle against — it’s almost a different style — and learning to compete with that and learning how to use my pace and aggression against them.”
Senz won four matches en route to his podium finish, leaving him two short of 100 for his career.
