YORK TWP. — Add another rung to the ladder of success the Cloverleaf wrestling program is building.

The top-seeded Colts rolled into Buckeye on Wednesday for the Division II, Region 10 State Duals and reached the semifinals by knocking off the third-seed Bucks 49-25 in a match that was much closer than what the final score shows.

Buckeye did its job to set up an all-Medina County quarterfinal with a 48-21 win over third-seeded Bay, while Cloverleaf had no trouble in a 67-9 victory over fourth-seeded Fairview.

Once there, the Colts (8-0) did what they needed to do against the Bucks (5-1) to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time in school history.

“It shows a lot to our character and hard work,” Cloverleaf 160-pounder Caleb Cass said. “We’re putting the work in the room in. It shows a lot to the guys we have. We have a real special group of guys who aren’t messing around and getting after it in practice.”

That want-to shine against the Bucks showed as the Colts stemmed the tide early and traded matches down low in an effort to get to their upper weights.

While the lead changed three times, Cloverleaf not only knew it had the hammers up top, but that Buckeye was going to give up 12 points to forfeits at the end of the lineup.

With things tied 25-25 after 170 pounds, Rocco Pearce (182) and Cory Stallings (195) picked up pins as a prelude to the forfeit wins by Reilly Cipullo (220) and Logan Henderson (285).

“I was very impressed with our poise,” Pearce said. “All our wrestlers wrestled very well. They had so much spirit and talent. It was amazing to watch them wrestle.”

The Colts spread the headlines as Jake Arnold (106), Brody Stallings (152), Cass (160), Pearce, Cory Stallings, Cipullo and Henderson won both matches.

“We knew we needed to start off strong with our lightweights,” Cory Stallings said. “We knew once we got into our heavyweights we’d be fine. We knew we had the potential.”

That potential will be tested next week by St. Vincent-St. Mary (5-3).

The Fighting Irish are just two seasons removed from a trip to Columbus for the State Duals. SVSM earned the right to face the Colts by knocking off Revere 51-30 and Padua 49-30 in the bottom half of the bracket.

It’s a matchup Cloverleaf is looking forward to as it sits two wins away from becoming the first team in Medina County to reach Columbus since the format change in 2013.

“These guys have to go out there and do the same things,” Colts coach Ken Curtis said. “They need to go out and get the pins and don’t get pinned. They have to keep their head.”

Buckeye immediately turned the page and started concentrating on defending its PAC Tournament title.

The Bucks travel to Firelands for a double dual tonight and do so after Anthony Ashley (113), Jake Bartinelli (126), Mike Clark (138), Jaret Lowry (145) and Jarrod Setliff (170) won both matches on Wednesday.

“We’ll learn from this,” Buckeye coach Rich Conkle said. “I thought we gave up too many bars and turns (to Cloverleaf). Those two forfeits at the end of the lineup kill us all the time.

“Hopefully we can take the win over Bay and build on it for conference and sectionals with our light guys and roll all the way through the lineup.”
