A family in the Normandy Park subdivision in Montville Township was awakened about 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver slammed into their condominium.
The driver, 34-year-old Justin M. Hartle, of the 3900 block of East Normandy Drive, was spinning his tires in reverse trying to escape, township police said.
Minutes earlier, he reportedly drove over a curb, struck a wooden sign, ran over a row of bushes, just missed a tree, traveled through a flower bed and into the condo, where the residents told police they heard a loud crash and smelled burning rubber.
Police said Hartle drove his 2004 Ford Taurus through the patio door and damaged the brick foundation of the condo.
A Montville officer was in the vicinity and responded.
Hartle was arrested on a charge of driving while impaired. He was given a Breathalyzer test at the police station and his blood-alcohol content was 0.25 percent, almost three times over the legal limit, the report said.
Police said Hartle told them he had just left two Medina restaurants where he had been drinking with friends. He said he must have fallen asleep while driving on Normandy Park Drive, just off state Route 18.
Police said evidence indicated Hartle failed to turn at the dead end of Normandy Park Drive.
