Hinckley envisions community center

Plans to renovate about 9,000 square feet of the old Hinckley fire station next to the town hall on Ridge Road was among the highlights of Wednesday's meeting of the Northern Medina County Chamber Alliance.

The meeting at Jilbert Winery in Liverpool Township was attended by about 60 members.

Hinckley Township Trustee Dave Sambor, Brunswick Hills Township Trustee John Witthuhn and Brunswick Ward 3 Councilman Joe Salzgeber each gave a brief presentation.


Sambor said he envisions the former fire station space becoming a community center for residents to hold events and meetings.

An estimated project cost has not been determined, Sambor said.

Trustees are working on selecting an architect.

"They'll evaluate what we should have there, be a part of community involvement and see what type of use will be appropriate" for the building, he said. "We'll end that (conceptual) phase with the construction project estimate and what the full idea will be."

Trustees are considering three architect firms.

"Once we select the firm, we'll utilize their experience with public engagement and what might be appropriate for this project," Sambor said, noting trustees might hold public meetings or conduct a survey. "We want to find out what the public would like to see in that space."

A timeline has not been determined for the project.

A community center has been discussed since the Fire Department moved to a new station about a half-mile south on Ridge Road in 2015, Sambor said.

Trustees meet the first and third Monday of the month at the town hall, 1410 Ridge Road.

Brunswick Hills

Brunswick Hills Township will receive 11 acres of donated land this year at the corner of state Route 303 and West Chase Drive, Witthuhn said.

The land is owned by Parkview Homes, a custom homebuilder that serves Brunswick, Brecksville, Strongsville and Stow. Its offices are in Strongsville. Parkview developed homes nearby the parcel that will be donated.

"We've been waiting for years for this to happen," Witthuhn said, noting the donation contract has been shared with the Medina County prosecutor.

"The talk was to have it (the land) last June."

Witthuhn said the Brunswick Hills hopes to build an administration building to house township and zoning offices. He also would like to partner with the Medina County Park District to develop a portion of the land as a park area with a pavilion for the community.

Designs have not been finalized, Witthuhn said, but "once (the township) gets the land, I hope to go full steam with this (idea)."

Once the contract is approved by the prosecutor, Witthuhn said trustees will move forward on development.

Trustees meet at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at Fire Station 1, 1918 Pearl Road.


Salzgeber said the city is asking voters May 2 to approve a 0.65 percent income tax request for safety forces.

If passed, the tax would replace the 0.50 percent tax set to expire at the end of this year. It would be a 0.15 percent tax increase overall and bring in $6.3 million annually.

Voters narrowly defeated a similar request - 7,975 votes to 7,698 - in November.

"(The levy) is necessary to fund our safety forces," Salzgeber said.
