Commissioners declare April child abuse awareness and prevention month

The Children’s Center of Medina is planning a one-mile walk Sunday to bring awareness to child abuse.

The walk will begin at 2 p.m. on Public Square in Medina and end at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 606 E. Washington St., where 466 pinwheels will be planted to symbolize each case of investigated child abuse in the county last year.

“Each pinwheel will be planted in honor of a child that was mistreated,” Shannon Collins, a case manager at the center, told county commissioners at their Tuesday meeting.

Commissioners passed a resolution Tuesday proclaiming April as child abuse awareness and prevention month in the county.

“Seeing all those pinwheels will demonstrate what a significant problem child abuse is in Medina,” Commissioner Pat Geissman said.

“And those are just cases that were investigated,” she added. “It’s important to remember that there are still others.”

About 2,000 calls concerning suspected abuse are received in Medina County annually, center officials have said. The figure includes calls to Medina County Job & Family Services.
