Dr. Thomas Tulisiak announced Thursday he will return to medical practice full time and resign as president of Medina Hospital, effective May 1.

It marked the second major announcement at the hospital in two months.

On March 16, the hospital, which is affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic, announced it will discontinue its birthing center as of July 1.

Vicky Snyder, chief operating officer at the hospital, will serve as interim president while a search is conducted to replace Tulisiak, according to the news release from Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital.

Tulisiak has been on the medical staff of Medina Hospital since 1983 and became president of the hospital in 2011. He previously served as medical director of the Cleveland Clinic Brunswick Family Health Center and vice president of medical operations at Medina Hospital. In his new office, Tulisiak will see patients at the Medina Hospital Medical Office Building, the hospital said.

“It has been a privilege and honor serving the Medina community as president of Medina Hospital,” Tulisiak said in a statement. “Our caregivers are outstanding. Through their dedication they provide the highest level of quality care and patient safety while providing a great patient experience. I am proud to be considered one of their fellow caregivers. After six years as hospital president and recently becoming a new grandparent, I have decided to spend more time with my family. Nevertheless, I will continue to serve the Medina community and return to clinical practice. I am confident of Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to Medina Hospital, the Medina community and region, and that Medina Hospital remains a vital strategic asset of our organization.”

Snyder has been chief operating officer for the last eight years. She has nearly 30 years of healthcare administrative, financial and operations experience.

Prior to joining Medina Hospital, Snyder worked in healthcare financial management and held roles as vice president of operations and director of finance at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.

“We’d like to thank Tom for his work and dedication to our patients, caregivers and the surrounding communities,” said J. Stephen Jones, president of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals and Family Health Centers, in the news release. “Tom has led Medina Hospital since nearly the beginning of its integration with Cleveland Clinic. Over the last six years, the hospital has become financially strong, expanded cardiology services, added pediatric subspecialties and a comprehensive wound center, and has seen a significant increase in quality and patient satisfaction. We appreciate the leadership Tom has provided, and we look forward to having him remain on the Medina Hospital medical staff.”

Medina Hospital joined Cleveland Clinic in 2009. Cleveland Clinic since has invested more than $80 million in the hospital, including new operating rooms, a wound center clinic and other outpatient services. It’s currently in the midst of a $5.8 million upgrade to the Emergency Department and a $1.4 million upgrade to the Intensive Care Unit.
