Chippewa Lake toxin levels lower but still hazardous

CHIPPEWA LAKE — Test results from water samples taken from Chippewa Lake last week showed lower algae toxin levels.

Toxin levels from an algal bloom caused by cyanobacteria dropped to 7.6 parts per billion from 10.5 in a test taken June 8, according to Medina County Park District Director Tom James.

Another sample will be taken this week, he said Monday, and officials “will continue to sample” the water until two consecutive weeks of test results show a reading of 6 ppb or lower, which is the Ohio Department of Health’s recommended threshold for posting a public health advisory.

Orange signs advising children, pregnant and nursing women in addition to individuals with certain medical conditions to stay out of the water were posted last week.
