YORK TWP. — A lifelong township resident is taking on an administrative position at her alma mater.

Jennifer Knapp, 40, will become treasurer of Buckeye Schools, effective Aug. 7. The board of education approved a three-year contract with an annual salary of $88,000 for Knapp during a special meeting Thursday morning.

Knapp succeeds Carolyn Weglewski, who announced her retirement in May after 24 years in the position.

“I’m ecstatic to be a part of the community and serve the students at Buckeye,” Knapp said. “I’m excited to work for the community and give back to the community that I grew up in.”

Board President Barb Gunkelman said, “It’s nice to hire one of our own graduates that are successful in their career and come back to work for us.”

Although Weglewski’s retirement is effective Aug. 1, the board approved a four-day, unpaid “volunteer” contract for Weglewski to serve as interim treasurer through Aug. 4.

“Carolyn, thank you for all you do,” Gunkelman said.

Knapp comes to Buckeye from Nordonia Hills Schools in Summit County where she served as assistant treasurer for two years.

While Knapp was in the process of receiving her treasurer’s license, she completed an internship credit at Wadsworth Schools with Treasurer Douglas Beeman.

She previously was a food service supervisor at Wadsworth Schools for 10 years and worked at Black River Schools for two years.

“Food service in school is huge,” Knapp said. “When I saw how skills in the business meshed together, I decided I wanted to do more with those skills and took the treasurer’s license.”

Knapp has a bachelor’s in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Akron and a master’s in business from Ashland University.

The 1994 Buckeye grad resides in York Township with her husband, Mike, and two sons.
