MEDINA — Friends of Medina Memorial Park & Pool are hosting a used bicycle drop-off noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Ward 1 Councilwoman Laura Parnell-Cavey said the idea for a used bike drop-off was suggested Wednesday during a planning meeting for the Pool Party and Picnic that the Friends will host as part of Medina’s bicentennial celebrations.
The goal of the drop-off is to help underprivileged kids experience the simple joy of riding their bike to the pool on a hot summer day, she said.
“One of the things that we want to make sure is that the kids ride their bikes there because that’s what we used to do.”
The bicycle drop-off will be at Medina Country Club, 5588 Wedgewood Road, Lafayette Township. Bicycles of all sizes will be accepted, and minor repairs will be done by Spokes bike rental in Medina before they are distributed to kids during the pool party, Parnell-Cavey said.
With spring just around the corner, it seemed like a time to get people thinking about any unused bikes that might be in garages or sheds, she said.
“People are spring cleaning and trying to get rid of things, and it just seemed like a natural tie-in,” said Parnell-Cavey, owner of Cool Beans Caf￩ on Public Square.
She said the goal is to collect at least 25 bikes for kids of all ages.
“You have got little kids with the training wheels that need their first bike to the older kids in middle school who could use a bike as well, so any size works out great,” Parnell-Cavey said.
If the event is a success, more drop-off dates could be added in the future, she said.
A date for the Pool Party and Picnic at Medina Memorial Pool, 421 E. Homestead St., has not yet been determined.
