WADSWORTH — Damage to a culvert underneath a College Street bridge near Holmesbrook Park forced the city to close the road indefinitely, Public Services Director Robert Patrick said Tuesday.
“It was (damaged) from heavy rain that we had on Saturday and Sunday, and heavy water wore out the edge of roadway,” he said.
Patrick said the headwall of an “old stone culvert” gave way due to the force and pressure from the heavy, wet ground.
College Street is closed between Trease and Leatherman roads.
“Detours were posted (Monday) night and we are working on a detour map that will be posted online,” Patrick said.
An investigation will determine if the damage can be repaired, or if it has compromised the structural integrity of the bridge, Patrick said.
If it is determined the bridge needs to be replaced, Patrick said the city can use funding from its emergency operations fund to cover costs. A damage estimate was not immediately available Tuesday.
