Food is paired with sides of activities at Buckeye Library Family Food Fest

YORK TWP. –– Tuesday’s Family Food Fest at Buckeye Library was a way for parents, children and community members to eat, learn how to cook and have a night off from doing the dishes.

In addition to food to sample, there were several free demonstrations and activities for all ages.

Kids could get their faces painted, have a balloon animal made for them or play at activity tables. Chef Greg Beegle showed children how to make fruit and veggie pizzas.

At 5 p.m., University of Akron nutrition and dietetics students Abby Perkins, Maria Garcia and Joe Zastawny did a presentation on how to make Black Bean and Corn Salsa.

During their presentation, they discussed “MyPlate,” which is a template that helps people plan healthy meals and make sure they are meeting the requirements listed in the food pyramid.

Other presentations included “Cooking Vegetarian” by staff members from Whole Foods 365, how to make healthy chocolate peanut butter granola bars by the Akron students, and edible essential oils by Lori Vitello, a seller of Young Living oils.

“Young Living essential oils are just something that I’m passionate about, so I also love to share with people how they can incorporate essential oils into their life for health benefits,” Vitello said.

Two chefs from Twiisted Burgers and Sushi in Medina spent their time at the event rolling and serving sushi.

By 6 p.m., Kyle Gloechner and Steven Osborn from Twiisted estimated that they had prepared and served 96 sushi rolls.

Other businesses that participated included One Eleven Bistro, Scooter’s Ice Cream, Gridirne Cookery and Marco’s Pizza.

When asked what she enjoyed most about the event, Dolores Borso, a Medina County resident, replied, “Eating.”

Others said the classes were the best part.

“Our daughter is taking the Good for You Class, so probably that,” Brunswick resident Donna Heinbaugh said.
