MEDINA — ArKay Florals in Brunswick and The Flower Gallery in Medina came under new ownership last month. A ribbon-cutting Friday at The Flower Gallery served to celebrate the occasion.
Mayor Dennis Hanwell came out to present Jackie and Jim Wolf, the new owners, with a proclamation and officials from Main Street Medina and the Chamber of Commerce came out to show their support.
“I’ve been in the business for 20-something years,” Jackie Wolf said. “I started in the garden with my grandmother.”
She learned about flowers and plants from her grandmother and, once her kids were in school and she was looking to get into a career, she stumbled upon her first job in a flower shop and has stayed in the field ever since.
After several job changes and some schooling, she ended up working for ArKay Florals in Brunswick and, upon hearing that the owner of Tthe Flower Gallery and ArKay Florals was looking to sell his shop and retire, she thought it was a great opportunity to further her career as well as to keep two local spots going.
“It would be great if we could just grow both businesses. I don’t want to move out of Medina, I don’t want to move out of Brunswick,” Jackie Wolf said. “I think we’ve got great people and great communities here in both places.”
She said both businesses are doing well and there are no major changes that she has in mind for them. Jim agreed that he likes how the businesses are running now.
He stressed the importance of coming into flower shops rather than trying to buy online or arrange them onesself.
“The one thing that we would want is just for people to realize nowadays with the economy and the internet and everything, when you come to an actual flower shop … you are getting a better-quality product, and you’re getting the personal touch,” said Jim. “You don’t have to settle for something that’s rewrapped on a shelf.”
Jackie added that while Pinterest and other sites may be good for floral ideas, consumers will not get the same touch as when they come into a flower shop and work with someone who is proficient in the business.
“We are in this business because we love the flowers and we love what we do and we want to make something really pretty,” said Jackie.
