MEDINA — Bob Starcher, a retired police lieutenant, will be the Ward 1 councilman in the city of Medina.
Starcher, 63, worked 30 years in Medina Police Department.
Starcher will be sworn in at the next council meeting Nov. 26, council clerk Kathy Patton said.
He was unanimously approved by the six council members. Council deliberated an hour and 20 minutes before making its announcement at City Hall.
Starcher will replace Laura Parnell-Cavey, whose last council meeting was Oct.22. Parnell-Cavey and her husband are moving to Montville Township. Medina council members must live in the ward in which they serve.
Starcher said he was first hired as police officer in Medina 1983. He retired as a lieutenant in 2013.
“I’ve remained active in the city,” he said.
He has served on the Medina County Drug Abuse Commission the last four years. He’s also an auxiliary police officer in Montville and works with the Medina County Police Activities League.
Others who interviewed for the position were former Ward 1 Councilman Brian Hilberg, Kevin Consiglio, John Wetzel and Suzanne Sharpe. Mark Williams dropped out before the meeting.
Starcher’s term will expire in 2019. He’ll have to run for another term then.
“I have every intention of doing that,” he said.
