Roundabout proposed for Montville Township

MONTVILLE TWP. — The Ohio Department of Transportation is proposing a roundabout at the intersection of state Route 162 and state Route 3 in the township.

The hope is to reduce crash dangers at the Sharon Copley/Route 3 intersection change.

ODOT compiled crash data from 2011-16 when it applied for safety funds for the project, Crystal Neelon, public information officer, said in an email.

During that span:

n There were 46 crashes, zero fatal, 10 with injuries and 36 that were property damage only;

n Of those crashes, 57 percent were rear-end crashes, 17 percent fixed-object crashes,

13 percent angle crashes and 4 percent or fewer sideswipes, backing, left turn or other crash types.

The route is heavily traveled. There is an average daily traffic of 13,565 vehicles on Route 3 north of Route 162, 11,282 vehicles per day on Route 3 south of Route 162, and 4,753 vehicles per day on Route 162, east of Route 3.

Neelon said a roundabout has many operational and safety benefits, including an average reduction of total crashes by 44 percent and reduction of fatal and injury crashes by 87 percent at existing rural stop-controlled intersections like Route 3 and Route 162.

This reduction occurs because vehicle speeds are much slower as they enter a roundabout, and roundabouts practically eliminate angle and left-turn crashes, she said.

Neelon said roundabouts also generally have lower overall vehicle delays than a stop-controlled intersection or a traffic signal.

The roundabout is at least two years away from fruition. ODOT is in the preliminary design phase of the project.

The next steps would be to complete the preliminary design, final design, right-of-way acquisition, complete the environmental process and advertise and award the project to a contractor. The construction of this project is scheduled for 2021, she said.

Neelon said ODOT received federal and state funding for the project, including $400,000 for design, $190,000 for right-of-way and

$1.65 million for construction.

ODOT has scheduled a public meeting 6-8 p.m. Feb. 7, at the Montville Administration and Safety Services Complex, 6665 Wadsworth Road.

The meeting will be an open-house format. Members of the public may visit at any time to talk one-on-one with members of the project team, view exhibits, ask questions and express any comments.

If residents cannot attend the meeting, written comments regarding the project may be sent to ODOT District 3, 906 Clark Ave., Ashland, OH 44805-1989. Residents with specific questions regarding the project should contact Don Rostofer in the ODOT District 3 Planning Department at (800) 276-4188, ext. 207-7178, or email Donald.Rostofer@
