Gazette staffers win AP awards


COLUMBUS — Gazette staffers won three awards at this year’s Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Association awards.

Sports editor Albert Grindle took second place for best headline writer, and Scott Kline took third in the same category. Grindle also took second place in best full-page design.

The Gazette was award third prize for best digital presence.

Editor Lisa Roberson won two awards for her work at the Chronicle-Telegram: Second place for best news writer, and third place for best public service for her coverage of the Elyria Schools master plan, which was ready to drop a south side school, but added it back after public outcry.

Fifty-five daily newspapers submitted 1,776 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2018.

The Gazette competed in Division II, for newspapers with daily circulation between 8,000 and 11,999.
