YORK TWP. —The decision to enter military service after high school is a big one, but three Buckeye High School seniors wanted to do just that — and publicly — Tuesday during a U.S. military signing ceremony at the York Township school.

Gust Pimpas (avionics mechanic), Hailey Williams (military police) and Emily Smith (ammunition specialist), announced their intentions to join the U.S. Army at the ceremony held at 3084 Columbia Road.

Buckeye Principal Kevin Jakub welcomed the students, guests and families.

“Together, we work in growing partnerships, collaborating with local schools, college campuses, employers and the U.S. Military,” he said in a statement. “We are all education and career development counselors proudly supporting our students and especially those who have stood up to answer the call of duty to serve our community, state and country.

“Working in unity, we are a more engaged community, educating students for the future and forging character for a lifetime. The service and dedication of these students is preceded by the brave men and women of the U.S. military who came before them, as exemplified by my grandfather, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

“Today, it is my honor and privilege to display the American flag awarded to his family for his personal courage and service to his country.”

Among the guests on hand were Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell, Buckeye school board member Dennis Matson, Buckeye Superintendent Kent Morgan, U.S. Military Chaplain Col. Dr. Reid Miller, Army Col. David Lariviere, Sgt. 1st Class Stephen Callahan from the Ohio Army National Guard and Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey Killen of the U.S. Army.
