Happy 90th birthday, Betty Louise (Markel) Bonewit! Born in the family’s Ashland home Aug. 15, 1926,
Betty was the second child to Oscar and Bernice Markel. She had three sisters and two brothers.
Betty quit school in the 10th grade because of her eye sight, later reconnecting with her Wellington High School class of 1945.
She started working at the age of 16 for Orrin Miller, who ran a grocery store in Wellington. When WWII broke out, the store closed and she worked at Isalys Restaurant. Upon reopening, Betty returned to Orrin
Miller’s grocery store. She also worked for Forest City, in Wellington, retiring after 21 years.
Betty married Harold Bonewit on Oct. 5, 1946, and raised three children, Richard (Linda), Jean (Chuck) and Lou Anne (Robert). She has seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
In celebration of Betty’s 90th birthday, a party will be at the Lorain County MetroParks on Jones Road at 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14. All are welcome! No gifts, please.
