Parishioners bring pets to outside Sunday service

CHIPPEWA LAKE — Pastor Randy K’Meyer smiled when he said the dogs sitting quietly during his sermon were better behaved than some adults he’s seen on Sundays.

“These pets today are amazing,” he said. “They’re being good. They’re being quiet. They’re not talking with their neighbors.”

CrossPointe Community Church held its yearly “Blessing of the Pets” event during an outdoor service Sunday.

This year’s attendance was smaller than usual — about 10 people and four dogs were in the audience.

K’Meyer attributed the lower turnout to the day’s earlier rainy weather. The church has been doing a pet blessing for about five years, he said.

In years past, parishioners have brought horses and goats, but this year the blessing was a dogs-only affair.

K’Meyer read some of Genesis 2, which deals with the story of the creation of animals.

“Animals were looked upon by the Lord as an important part of creation,” he said.

Barb Ashworth, of Lodi, brought her 8-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Bucky. She said she comes to the pet-centered service every year, to ask for prayers for the good health of her dogs.
