MEDINA — City Council unanimously approved the appointment of Ed Kinney as Medina’s new police chief Monday night.

To some it was only a formality, but not to the 43-year-old Kinney.

“It’s nice to get a vote of confidence with council confirming (the hire),” Kinney said.

He was sworn in by Mayor Dennis Hanwell at the council meeting. His wife, Sandy, pinned his badge on his chest, and he was given an ovation by several officers from Medina and Montville and Medina townships.

Kinney, most recently a sergeant on the Medina force, was appointed by Hanwell on Oct. 25. His chief’s salary will be retroactive to that date: $94,151 a year.

He was a motorcycle officer, on the SWAT team, a detective and member of the Medina County Drug Task Force since joining the Medina force in 1997.

He said he has a “busy agenda” of things he wants to get done.

Kinney said he’s in the process of hiring five new officers. One will start next week. Two others must go through the police academy.

Another officer, Bryan Wagner, was promoted to sergeant last week. He also was given his oath of office by Hanwell.

One of his goals, he said, is to have the department’s canine team deployed sometime in 2018.

Kinney also noted that after becoming chief, he activated the police department’s dormant Facebook page, which has 12,000 followers.

Ward 4 Councilman Jim Shields sat in on the interview with Kinney, along with Law Director Greg Huber and Hanwell.

“I was very impressed with your interview,” Shields said. “I hope people realize what a great department we have here in Medina.”

Hanwell said Kinney was No. 1 of the three finalists in testing. The other finalists were Sgt. Brett McNabb and Sgt. Scott Marcum.
