MASSILLON — Authorities have confirmed that a seventh-grader who shot himself inside a school bathroom has died.

A spokesman for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s office said today that Keith Simons, 13, of Jackson Township, was pronounced dead shortly after noon at Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron.

The medical examiner will examine him in the coming days, the spokesman said.

Authorities have said Simons arrived at Jackson Middle School at approximately 7:50 a.m., went into the restroom and shot himself.

The student also carried an explosive device inside his backpack, meant to cause a distraction, that did not explode.

Jackson Township Police described the weapon as long gun. Officials didn't know how the boy got the gun or if anybody else may have been involved or knew something.

Parents rushed to the school to get their children Tuesday after the school sent out a notice about the shooting.
