MEDINA — Customers lined up outside the new Aldi for its grand opening on a cool, crisp Thursday morning.
“We were hoping for a great crowd to start the day as we open the doors,” said Alex Brandt, director of operations. “We were just hoping for as many people in the Medina community to turn out and come check out the store.”
More than 100 people were waiting to do just that before the new store at 1180 N. Court St. opened at 8:30 a.m., and many more came in afterward.
The store’s aisles were packed as customers checked out produce and employees handed out samples of products and promotional items.
“We are giving out free shopping bags to everyone who comes through the doors today,” Brandt said. “Our most sought-after prize would be the free produce for a year, which goes to one lucky customer. It’s a random drawing.”
In addition, the first 100 customers could participate in Aldi’s Golden Ticket Program. Brandt said the first 100 customers through the door received an Aldi gift card of varying amounts up to $100.
“I’m excited because … I’m a big Aldi fan,” Medina resident Kristi Estremera said of the grand opening. “I like their products, honestly, and it’s simple. There are only a few aisles, so I don’t get overwhelmed.”
Another Medina resident, Ann Patterson, added: “It’s cost effective. … We have five kids and that’s probably the best part.
“The food’s so good. To get good food at a good price, can’t beat it.”
Aldi also has stores at 3444 Medina Road, Montville Township; 174 Park Centre Drive, Wadsworth; and 4221 Center Road, Brunswick. Aldi’s distribution center and office complex is at 1319 W. 130th St., Hinckley Township.
