BRUNSWICK — A KFC will replace the Sonic Drive-In on Center Road in Brunswick.
“We were looking in this trade area for another KFC location,” said Adam Macke, construction manager for KFC franchise operator Mitra QSR.
“We do own the one on Pearl Road as well. There’s no intent to close that store, it’s just that we feel like this is a separate trade area, so we were looking for an opportunity,” said Macke. “Just the way the site lays out, and the existing building condition, it’s a good candidate for us to go and do a conversion versus finding an empty lot.”

Details were announced Thursday during a Planning Commission meeting that the company plans to add space for an indoor seating area and an outdoor patio onto the front of the building. The addition of more than 830 square feet will make the current building a total of 2,522 square feet. There will be 42 interior seats and eight exterior patio seats.
In addition, the canopy covers, menu boards and speakers from Sonic will be removed and there will be minor changes to the parking lot.
The Planning Commission gave Macke the go-ahead after meeting with civil engineers to begin the processes of planning the building modification for indoor seating.
Macke will have to come back before the Planning Commission with a more detailed design plan.
There is currently no timeline for this project as it is still in the early phases of planning. The Sonic opened in 2010.
