HINCKLEY TWP. –– A local CrossFit gym has purchased a new location at 4049 Ridge Road in Hinckley Township.
“We were looking for a bigger space,” said Heidi Bogue, one of the owners of CrossFit High Gear. “We were at 5,400 square feet there (in Granger Township) and we’ve got 320 members. This is 16,000 square feet … we definitely needed the space.”
Bogue owns the fitness business with her husband, Jeff, and Tom and Anna Karos. The CrossFit High Gear team has put in more than 1,000 hours of work over the last three weeks in order to get the new location in working order by the end of the month.
There are still quite a few finishing touches that need to go into the old Gasko Fabricated Products building.
“It definitely needs a facelift, but it’s going to look great,” said Bogue.
The owners had just purchased a lot on state Route 18 when they saw online listing of the Ridge Road industrial property, built in 1964, saying it had ceilings 14 feet tall. They now are selling the lot on Route 18.
“I walked in and I’m like ‘this is actually perfect for a CrossFit gym,’” said Bogue. “We just need a big open space, we need the height of the ceilings to be able to put up our gymnastic rigs, our ropes that we like to climb and all that stuff.”
CrossFit is a high-intensity workout program that involves constant movement and varied workouts that include weight lifting, calisthenics and gymnastics.
Bogue said a lot of work is happening to make sure the facility gets the facelift it needs. The ceilings will be painted black, new paneling and flooring will be put in and more. There will be a yoga studio, which will allow for more yoga classes, and a child care center for members with children.
There is even a room where judges will be able to keep score during competitions and people can hang out and play music during workouts.
“We are hiding all the ugly one idea at a time,” Bogue said.
New equipment, as well as old equipment from the previous location will be installed soon after renovations are done. CrossFit opened in August 2015 at 5035 Beach Road, Granger Township.
In addition to more space, the location of the new gym will be beneficial.
“I love the accessibility for the schools,” said Bogue. “I think that we’re very community-centered because everyone knows where Highland High School is and the middle school, so I’m hoping that we can be a real hub, not only for the students but for the parents.”
Parents will be able to get a workout in after dropping off their students or can come in while waiting for students to finish up with after school activities.
“We also want it to be a safe space for kids,” said Bogue. “So, if kids are done with school and they just need to hang out they can come here and hang out and get a workout in. We have a kid program and teen program so we are hoping to really grow that just by being across the street.”
