Robert A. Hickman, 96, of Chatham, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 at his home, following a declining period of health. He was born August 10, 1921 in Flat Rock, Alabama, to John Carl and Jennie Pearl Hickman. His family moved to Tennessee where he grew up and graduated from Decatur High School.
He served in the U.S. Army Cavalry at Ft. Oglethorpe Georgia and later with the 923rd Field Artillery Battalion in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII. Following his military service, he married Doris June Pierce in 1946. They moved to Cleveland in 1953, later residing in Brunswick before moving to Chatham in 1967.
Mr. Hickman was an accomplished musician having mastered a number of instruments which included the banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, piano and harmonica. He retired to farming after being employed as a bookkeeper for General Motors in Cleveland for 20 years.

Surviving are daughter, Jennie D. Shadley of Chatham; son, Randall (Airlene) Hickman of Mansfield; grandchildren, Reid, Rachel and Andrew Hickman, Shawn, Derek and Colin (Jessica) Stutz; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Shea, C.J. and Evelyn and step grandchildren, Erwin, Dodie and David.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; granddaughter, Sonja; sister, Kathleen Allen and brother, Lester Hickman.
Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 11 A.M. at Chatham Cemetery in Chatham. Pastor Paul Hostetler will officiate.
