William (Bill) John Shurance, 92, of Seville, was called home by his Heavenly Father Saturday, January 27, 2018. He was born in Mansfield, on September 25, 1925 to Elizabeth (Ziegler) and William Eugene Shurance.
Bill began his walk with the Lord when he was a young man. He was drafted into the Army during WWII where he made prosthetic limbs. He married Helen Keiper on December 8, 1946, moving to Medina in 1952. Bill was a member of the Medina Apostolic Christian Church, where he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher and Minister for many years. He worked for 32 years as an inspector at Portage Machine, finishing his career at Triple S in 1987.
Bill and Helen were a beautiful example of love in their retirement years. Bill, kind and faithful, was always happy to work alongside his life-long companion on projects ranging from arboriculture to puzzles, from the cellar to the kitchen. Bill worked on patterns for her quilting and kept track of all the fruits and vegetables their Seville plot produced each year. Together they sold the produce at local farmers markets and shared lovingly with those around them. Bill enjoyed interacting with each customer and often tried to cheer others with stories and quips to make them laugh. He often expressed his thankfulness to his Lord for providing so abundantly.
Bill's love was shown in his concern for the well-being of those around him. He enjoyed spending time playing with, listening to and telling his experiences to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His commitment to peace was manifest in his conscientious objector status in the army and his unwillingness to ever speak harm toward others. All who knew him observed his patience and self-control in his careful attention to the details of events and metrics of life, which he devotedly recorded in his journal. Many will remember the gentleness with which he approached and spoke with others. Bill leaves the legacy of a simple, humble life led by the Spirit.
William is survived by his wife of 71 years, Helen; children, Becky (Rick) Hunyady, Nan (Don) Steidl, Tom (Lilly) Shurance, Judy (Jim) Fetzer and Steve Shurance; 20 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Martha Bolera.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Waite and Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina. A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, February 1, 2018 also at Waite and Son. Interment will be at Poe Cemetery.
