Donald Michael Smerick, 81, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018. Donald was born October 1, 1936 in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Michael and Emily (Brondos) Smerick.
One of Donald's greatest passions was painting. He loved listening to the Beatles and would often let the group's music inspire his art. To relax, he kept up with a variety of comic books (especially Marvel) and would share them with his children and grandchildren when he was finished. He also loved classic cars and was often found imagining his own custom versions of his favorite models in his home art studio. He enjoyed showing off his '62 Buick Skylark at local car shows.
Donald was a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran, but spent most of his career in commercial advertising. He began working for Zarney Studios in Medina in the 1970's, where he continued to hone his skills as an artist. He was an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Lodi.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Joan (McClure); children, Jonathan Smerick, Laura (James) Sickels and Jennifer Smerick; grandsons, David and Daniel Sickels and sisters, Darlene Chenault and Yvonne Smerick.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Kontra.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 20, 2018 at 11 A.M. at Waite and Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina, where Donald's family will receive friends on Thursday, July 19, 2018 from 5 to 8 P.M. Pastor Chris Cahill will preside over the services. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
