Ronald John Vanderwyst, 84, of West Salem, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky. He was born January 18, 1934 in Cleveland, to Arnold and Edith (Hager) Vanderwyst. He grew up in Cleveland and Strongsville and entered the U.S. Navy in 1952, serving until being honorably discharged in 1954.
On July 15, 1955, he married Carol Oros in Angola, Indiana. They resided in Penfield and later lived in Columbia Station and Strongsville before moving to West Salem 13 years ago. Ronald had worked as a welder for Boilermakers Union Local 744 in Cleveland.
He had a wide variety of hobbies which ranged from horse breaking to race car building. His imaginative thinking in fabricating cars, boats, motorhomes and other vehicles led to numerous impressive results.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage this past July; five children, Darlene Glanski of Medina, Deborah Zajacz of North Royalton, Ronald (Diana) Vanderwyst of Elyria, Lora Vanderwyst of Medina, Tracy Vanderwyst of Spencer; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Richard Vanderwyst and Jerry (Sandy) Vanderwyst of Creston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arlene and brother, Harry.
A private family memorial will be held.
