Robert W. Keyes, 96, of Medina, transitioned from his Earthly Home to his Heavenly Home on Thursday, September 6, 2018 surrounded by the love of his family and with his devoted cat, Marble by his side. Bob was born January 27, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, to Andrew and Margaret (Claurer) Keyes. He grew up in the city and graduated from Austin High School.
In 1942 Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, proudly serving his Country in the Pacific during WWII. His campaigns included, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Corporal Keyes was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Chicago to work at Western Electric's Hawthorn Plant, where he met his future wife, Florence Mae Strandquist. They married on December 6, 1948. In 1955, the couple moved their young family to the Western Suburb of Westmont and into the house that Bob built for them.
Bob and Florence moved to Medina in 1990. Bob was an avid gardener with a large vegetable and flower garden, which he enjoyed sharing with neighbors and friends. He enjoyed hours of walking the track at the high school and all over town, usually carrying bags of aluminum cans that he collected along the way, which he would recycle for the SPCA and Save Ohio Strays. For years, Bob would also manage the collection of aluminum cans at the City garage, to benefit the SPCA, going faithfully every Saturday. He was honored as volunteer of the year from both of these animal organizations! Bob loved Bluegrass Music! In his later years, Bob and Molly spent many evenings traveling to Bluegrass venues listening to music and making new friends. They also loved to eat at Bob Evans!
Missing him deeply will be his daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Steve Adams and son, John Keyes (Liz); grandchildren, Christopher (Kristen), Matthew (Jennifer), Elizabeth (Richard) and Kelly (Sara) and great-grandchildren, Ellie, Jack, Harper and Josephine.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence in 1993; brothers, James and Glenn and infant son, John Earl.
Bob's family would like to thank the wonderful care givers at Medina Hospital's, ICU Unit and 2 North and Hospice of Medina County, both in home care and at the Medina Care Center. Most especially we would like to thank our Angel, Evy, who cared and loved Bob as family!
A celebration of Robert's life will be held Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 5 P.M. at Granger United Methodist Church, 1235 Granger Rd., Medina. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 4 P.M. until time of service at 5 P.M. A period of fellowship will follow.
