Jerry Andrew Akers, 75, formerly of Litchfield, died peacefully Saturday, February 2, 2019 at his home. Jerry was born April 20, 1943 in Glen Lyn, Virginia, to Andrew Lincoln Akers and Lena Dora Mae (Stowers) Akers.
Jerry was a Vietnam Veteran, honorably serving his Country in the U.S. Navy from February 27, 1964 through April 22, 1968 as an Aviation Machinists Mate (Reciprocating Eng. Mech.) Petty Officer 3rd Class. He proudly served aboard both the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) "Big E" and USS Coral Sea (CVA-43).
Jerry enjoyed working with his hands, construction, vehicle repairs or helping others with creative projects. He had a true passion to fix what was old or broken. He saw the beauty and appreciated antiques and old homes and enjoyed returning them to life. Jerry could fix anything and was often seen working on classic cars, semi-trucks, forklifts, boats or anything with a motor. Jerry was a treasure hunter who collected antiques, coins, kerosene lamps, cars, tools and anything he deemed of value.
Jerry will be deeply missed by his daughters, Deborah (Aaron) Holmes of Westminster, Colorado, Laura (Mack) Collins of Florence, South Carolina, Karen (Jefferson) Barfield of Florence, South Carolina, Jennifer (Aaron) Flores of Ventura, California; 12 grandchildren, Brandon (Rebecca) Elledge of Ocklawaha, Florida, Dustan (Mya) Elledge of Westminster, Colorado, Tyler Elledge of Westminster, Colorado, Kayla (Mathew) Koumas of Florence, South Carolina, Sierra (Zachery) Wedgeworth of Newport, North Carolina, SaLena Elledge of Westminster, Colorado, Alaina Barfield of Florence, South Carolina and Grainger Barfield of Florence, South Carolina, Jonathan Flores of Ventura, California, Kamiley Flores of Ventura, California, Kaylan Flores of Ventura California and Jacob Flores of Ventura, California; six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Elledge, Dakota Elledge, Kaleb Elledge, Charlotte Elledge, Marcus Elledge and Collins Koumas; brother, Ray (Vicki) Akers of Polk, Ohio and sisters, Susan Getson, Lafayette, Indiana and Betty Travis of Lodi.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Akers of Elyria and sisters, Lila Haney of Lodi and Ronda Bragg of West Salem.
Committal service with Military Honors will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
