Barbara Rowe Brewster Knight, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 3, 2019 at her home in Valley City. She was born January 24, 1937.
She spent her early years in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, middle school in Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota, graduated high school in Kansas City, Missouri and college at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. There she met and married Rodney M. Knight. Together they spent their life's journeys. The USAF took them to Biloxi, Mississippi and Anchorage, Alaska. A civilian job opportunity brought them to North Olmsted followed by Valley City where they resided 44 years.
Professionally, her love of children led to a degree in Childhood Education. She practiced that in Anchorage, Cleveland's West Side Community House, Medina County Career Center and anywhere she saw a kid with a meltdown. For years after retirement ex-students remembered her. Barb was always active in her community wherever she was. She led Girl Scout, 4-H groups and the Buckeye School Band Parents. Emmanuel UCC and the Liverpool Twp. Historical Society benefited for many years by her dedication, involvement and secretarial skills. And all enjoyed her light hearted, fun-loving personality.
There were two constant passions of her life. One was the Sigma Kappa Sorority beginning in college. Active on campus she continued being involved in Anchorage, NE Ohio and eventually the national organization and became its National Secretary. Upon moving to Valley City she and Rod fell in love with its Frog Jump Festival and led the jumping ring until now. Her mantra of "It's for the kids" was very visible and resulted in an event where family knew their kids were loved.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanor May Rowe Brewster and Fredrick Burton Brewster and all aunts and uncles.
She is survived by the absolute loves of her life, Rod; daughter, Terri Bryan; grandchildren, Daniel Davis (Amanda) Bryan of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Madeline Rowe Bryan of Toledo and Timothy Amonte Knight Bryan of Roanoke, Virginia; great-granddaughters, Nora Liane Bryan (4) and Eliza Katherine Bryan (4 weeks); cousins, E.J. (Ed) Mahoney of St. Petersburg, Florida and Karen (Ray) Heuser of Verona, Pennsylvania.
