Dorothy A. (Shaner) Cowling, 95, of Spencer, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Brookdale South in Medina, where she had resided the past 18 months. She was born August 19, 1923 in Akron, to Cyril and Bertha (Zipfel) Shaner.
Dorothy was a 1941 graduate of Garfield High School in Akron. She later graduated from Kent State Business College in 1944 and began working as a bookkeeper for Fairlawn Supply and Concrete, where she retired from in 1984 after 40 years of service. She moved to Spencer following her marriage to Jack Cowling on October 26, 1991.
Dorothy was a member of the Spencer Pythian Sisters Lodge, Spencer United Methodist Church and 70 year member of Alpha Iota Business Sorority, serving as an Ohio Regional Counselor for 10 years. She loved dancing, gardening, reading and enjoyed her family and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Helen Aberth of Smithfield, Virginia; sister-in-law, Janet Shaner of Kihi Maui, Hawaii; nieces, Mary Roth of Nevada, Laura Gale of Canada, Beth Garner of Virginia, Connie McColley of West Virginia, Diana LaMonte of Uhrichsville, Ohio and Linda DiDonato of Dover, Ohio and nephew, Michael Shaner of West Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and brother, Kenneth Shaner.
Visitation will be Monday, June 17, 2019 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Parker Funeral Home, 202 E. Main St., Spencer, followed by a graveside service in Spencer Cemetery immediately following the visitation. Pastor Reid Firestone will officiate.
