The Cavaliers will take part in the first game of the NBA regular season and once again play on Christmas, the league announced Thursday.
The Cavs, who have been to three straight NBA Finals and won a title in 2016, will host Boston in the league’s season opener at 8 p.m. on Oct. 17. It will be the eighth time in the last nine years Cleveland has opened its season at Quicken Loans Arena.
The Cavs will play on Christmas for the 14th time in the franchise’s 48-year history, this time at Golden State at 3 p.m. in a game that will be shown on ABC. The teams have met in the last three Finals, with the Warriors winning in 2015 and 2017. A year ago, Cleveland beat Golden State on Christmas on a contested fadeaway jumper by Kyrie Irving.
The Warriors game is one of five that will be televised nationally that day.
The bulk of the NBA regular-season schedule will be released next week, but the NBA also announced the Cavs will play at Milwaukee in an Oct. 20 game to be televised by TNT.
After Cleveland’s opening-night game vs. the Celtics, who added Gordon Hayward in the offseason, the Warriors will host Houston at 10:30 p.m. on TNT. The game will feature the Warriors’ championship ring ceremony.
The Cavs also announced Thursday that they will play five preseason games beginning Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., when they host Atlanta at The Q. Cleveland will host Indiana on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Chicago on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
The Cavs’ other preseason games will be vs. Washington at Capital One Arena on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and vs. Orlando at the Amway Center on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
All exhibition games will be televised by Fox Sports Ohio and carried on flagship station WTAM 1100-AM.
Preseason ticket information will be announced later this month.
