Wadsworth quarterback Joey Baughman joined exclusive company Tuesday when the Divisions II and III All-Ohio teams were released by The Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.
The 6-foot-1, 192-pound senior was named D-II Offensive Player of the Year, joining Wadsworth’s Jack Snowball (2011, D-I offense), Buckeye’s Nick Tavernelli (2005, D-III defense) and Darren Cereshko (2002, D-III defense), Highland’s Mike Kudla (2001, D-III defense) and Brunswick’s Darian Miskewycz (1995, D-I offense) as Medina County players to win such an award.
“Division 2 offensive player of the year... thankful for all of my coaches and every single one of my teammates and most importantly Grizzly Nation! Couldn't have done it without you guys. Go Grizzlies,” Baughman tweeted.
Baughman smashed records as the Grizzlies went 11-1 and averaged a county-record 49.1 points. Baughman rushed for 1,533 yards and 20 touchdowns and passed for 3,060 yards and 36 scores. The combined 4,593 yards and 56 TDs are area records.
“The unquestioned leader of our team,” coach Justin Todd said. “In two years, Joey put together the greatest collection of offensive plays in Grizzly football history. It’s fun to wonder what his senior stats would have looked like if not for running clocks. He would most certainly own every single-season record a Wadsworth QB can have.”
Teammate Clay McComas (OL, 6-1, 237, sr.) was a second-team choice, as was Highland all-purpose player Jake Rogers (RB, 5-10, 165, jr.).
Third-team honors went to Highland linebacker Ethan Gerding (5-10, 177, sr.) and Wadsworth receiver Mitchell Blackburn (5-11, 172, sr.), while the Grizzlies’ Joey Fernholz (DL) and Christian Szalay (WR) were honorable mention.
Buckeye’s Dom Kriz (6-0, 242, sr.) was a D-III third-team offensive lineman, while Bucks quarterback Adam Fauver and Cloverleaf lineman Nate Clingan and linebacker Cory Stallings were honorable mention.
